ABOUT US - Professional Court Reporters
We are known as stenographers, court reporters, and realtime writers. We work as captioners, CART reporters, court reporters, in courtrooms, lawyers offices, board rooms, classrooms, provide captions for television programming, etc.
In the role of a court reporter, our purpose is to produce a verbatim record. We are the keeper of the spoken word or known as the guardian of the spoken word. We are part of the discovery process in an arbitration or deposition. In many jurisdictions, the court reporter is required to obtain the Certified Shorthand Reporter certification, known as the CSR and obtain specialized training in court procedures. The CSR verifies that the court reporter can write at least 225 words per minute, using a stenomachine.
Computerized technology is used to provide instantaneous translation, which the witness or the lawyers can view. This technology allows the court reporter to produce a draft transcript for the client at the end of a job or emailed in a text format. Draft transcripts have minmal editing and is not the official transcript. The draft transcript is used as an aid, such as note-taking. The official transcript is usually ordered for appeal purposes or in preparation for trial and used for citation.
With computerized technology, we can produce an interactive realtime connection with a client's computer. The stenomachine is connected to a computer, using specialized software for realtime translation. The spoken word is captured and translated instantaneously. The client gains access to the instanteous translation by connecting to the reporter's computer. We have used a software product called LiveNote. LiveNote is a software which allows for an interactive realtime connection. Access to the text file allows the client to annotate notes. In order to use LiveNote, a purchase of a token is required or register for an interactive realtime connection. COMMUNICATION ACCESS REALTIME - CART
This skill also allows us to work with the Deaf and hard of hearing community. We are known as the CART provider. We use our stenographic skills to provide the access to communication that a student needs in the classroom. We work with consumers in the business settings, i.e., board meetings, church services, seminars, etc.
What is CART? Communication Access Realtime Translation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This is instantaneous translation of the spoken word into text, so that an individual who has a hearing deficit can participate in an educational setting, meetings, seminars, church services, etc.
The CART Provider uses a stenograph machine which is connected to a computer via cables or the latest technology, a wireless stenomachine called the elan Mira A3. The consumer is able to see the text by looking at the CART Provider's computer screen. In group meetings where there are three or more CART consumers, a projecter is used to display the text onto a large screen as you can see here in the church setting.
